When the Battle of Cambrai began on 20th November, 1917, subsidiary attacks were also made with the aim of diverting enemy troops away from the main battle. One of these took place at Lempire about ten miles to the south of Cambrai, near Épehy when the 4th Royal Lancaster, 8th Liverpool and 2/5th Lancashire Fusiliers battalions 164 Brigade, 55th Division attacked enemy positions at Guillemont Farm. Things went well at first and the objectives were taken but then a strong counter attack forced all three battalions back to their starting line with casualties of over 600. One of these was Harry Sessions of 8th Liverpool who was killed. |
