William Chater died from wounds on 12th October, after having been taken back to a hospital near Rouen, but as yet there is no information as to when and where he was wounded. The 1st Middlesex battalion was part of 19 Brigade that had arrived in France in August 1914 and which had been in much of the action since that date, including the Battle of the Aisne.
