On 3rd July, 1917, 17th London of 141 Brigade, 47th Division moved into the front line north of the Ypres-Comines canal to the south of Ypres. The Battalion Diary entries for the first three days spent here recorded that the enemy artillery was active during the day hostile aircraft were very much in evidence, the reserve and support lines were intermittently shelled by heavy guns and that the ration parties were harassed by shell fire. Amid all this chaos Arthur Wills was killed on 6th July.
