On 29th March, 1917, the 8th London battalion of 140 Brigade, 47th Division moved into the front line in the Canal sub sector of the Ypres salient. On the following day the battalion’s support area was heavily shelled resulting in twenty casualties. Unfortunately the battalion diaries for the next two months are missing so the exact circumstances that led to the death of James Hilson on 1st April, 1917 are not know. However it was very likely that it was more of the same and that shell fire was the cause. |
