Second Battle of Ypres (April-May, 1915)

In April 1915 the Germans, using gas for the first time, launched an all out attack on the salient around the Belgian town of Ypres. It became a gargantuan struggle that lasted well into the next month and at the end of it, the salient, though drastically reduced, still stood.

On 13th May, 1915 the 2nd Royal Irish Fusiliers of 82 Brigade, 27th Division left reserve positions in Sanctuary Wood and moved into front line trenches running from Bellewarde Farm to the Ypres-Roulers railway where they remained until relieved on 18th May. There was a great deal of artillery action by both sides at this time and it is likely that it was shell fire that caused the death of Ronald Brooman-White on 15th May.
