From 22nd October through to 10th November, the 1st Rifle Brigade battalion of 11 Brigade, 4th Division were holding the line at Le Touquet while the rest of the Brigade was in trenches at nearby Ploegsteert Wood. On their relief the battalion moved back to billets in Le Bizet and on the following night, 11th November, they took over reserve trenches in Ploegsteert Wood. The next night they moved into the front line at St Yves where they remained until relieved on 18th November, the day on which Stephen Mansfield was killed. During their time here they worked hard at improving and strengthening the trenches as well as digging new ones while routinely coming under shell and sniper fire. |
