The Royal Naval Harwich Force destroyers, HMS Scott and HMS Ulleswater (sometimes misspelt as Ullswater) were patrolling along the Dutch coast on 15th August, 1918 when they were both sunk. Some sources say that they were torpedoed by the German submarine UC-71 whereas others claim that they were both victims of mines. The latter is the more likely explanation because since August 5th, UC-71 had been undergoing repairs in dry dock and was not back in operation until September. Torpedo or mine, it had the same consequences for Joseph Lee, one of the twenty two crew members of HMS Scott, who lost their lives. |
