From 20th-25th July, 1918, the 12th East Surrey battalion of 122 Brigade, 41st Division were in the front line at La Clytte in Belgium. Things were generally quiet here during these five days except on 24th July when a raid was carried out from their trenches by a party of the 15th Hampshire battalion. This inevitably resulted in retaliation from the enemy and in the ensuing artillery bombardment, seven men from 12th East Surrey were killed and three wounded. John Haywood was one of those killed. |
