On 30th June 1918, the 2nd Bedfordshire battalion of 21 Brigade, 30th Division, along with 6th Royal West Surrey (Queens) and 6th Royal West Kent of 37 Brigade, 12th Division, attacked a 1,100 yard stretch of the German lines opposite their positions near Bouzincourt, just to the north-west of the town of Albert. Zero hour was 9.35pm and despite an enemy artillery barrage which began ten minutes later, all objectives were reported taken by 11.40pm and that consolidation had begun. The battalion remained in these forward positions having to contend with counter attacks and shelling until 3rd July at which point they moved back to billets at Warloy. 2nd Bedfordshire had sustained about one hundred casualties during this operation one of whom was James Burns who was killed on 2nd July.
