HMS Bittern was a Royal Navy Avon class destroyer built in 1896. During the First World War she was part of the Devonport Local Flotilla operating in the coastal waters of the south-west of England. On 4th April, 1918 she collided with the merchant vessel SS Kenilworth off the Isle of Portland in thick fog and was so badly damaged that she sank within minutes with the loss of all he crew including William Follett.
