On 10th June, 1915, the 14th London battalion, then part of 1 Brigade, 1st Division, moved to reserve billets in Annequin and for the next four days provided working parties which were employed in trench construction and repair.

On 13th June they moved into the front line to the south of the La Bassée road where they remained until relieved on 17th June. Arthur Moffat was killed on 14th June but the battalion diary provides no further information about his death. The attrition rate among British soldiers on the Western Front was on average 300 each day and 60% of these were as a result of shellfire. When not involved in an actual battle it was either shell fire or a sniper’s bullet that caused most deaths and injuries.
