Leonard Checkley died from malaria on 25th May, 1918 while serving with the Royal Army Service Corps in East Africa. British troops, along with their African counterparts were involved in a struggle with the garrison of German East Africa, now Tanzania, for the whole of the war. Although greatly outnumbered the Germans had inflicted a series of defeats on the British and by the end of the war were still in control of much of their territory. The fighting spread to neighbouring countries, including Mozambique and Pemba (formerly known as Porto Amelia) was the base of the Anglo-Portuguese forces in 1918.
