Current Information:Born-Hampstead 19th London (St. Pancras) had arrived in France in March 1915 and became part of 141 Brigade, 47th Division. After the necessary period of trench training, 47th Division took over the line around Vermelles in northern France, where they stayed for most of the summer. On 29th May 19th London moved into the trenches in the Le Preol sector, near Beuvry. The battalion diary records 30th May, 1915 being ‘ordinary routine’ but clearly not at all ordinary for Lance Corporal Bass and the other four men who were killed in action on that day. |
