On 23rd June, 1915, the 3rd Royal Fusiliers battalion of 85 Brigade, 28th Division, left their billets at La Cytte and moved into trenches at Dickebusch just to the south of Ypres where they remained until relieved on 29th June. William Hayes died from wounds on 29th June after having been sent to a base hospital in Rouen and it is likely that he was wounded during this time in the front line.
