On 24th May, 1915, 2nd Rifle Brigade battalion of 25 Brigade, 8th Division left their billets in Estaires and moved into the nearby D line trenches with battalion HQ at Ruie du Bacquerot where they remained until relieved on 31st May. The battalion diary entry for 31st May, the day on which William Turner was killed, recorded that the enemy fired trench mortars and howitzers and that two men were buried by the explosions. Another man was killed by rifle fire.
