During the evening of 15th May, 1915, 20 Brigade of 7th Division moved to trenches north of Festubert in preparation for an attack which began at 3.15 the following morning. The 1st Grenadier Guards, were in support of the 2nd Border battalion and when the first line of trenches were taken, 1st Grenadier Guards passed through to continue the attack and more ground was gained. The battalion remained in these positions throughout 17th May as 21 Brigade took over the attack and on 18th May they were relieved and moved back to billets in Hinges, The records, including those of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, show 15th May as being the date on which the battalion’s casualties, including that of Anthony Ellis, were incurred but this is a recording error and the correct date is 16th May.
