On 30th June, 1917, 23rd London of 142 Brigade, 47th Division moved into the front line near the Damm Strasse, an area that had captured earlier in the month during the Battle of Messines. They remained in these trenches until relieved on 8th July. The Battalion Diary is not very forthcoming, nor indeed very accurate regarding their spell here. The entry for 1st July simply reads that one man was killed and another three wounded. However other records show that at least three men were killed on this day and that another two died from wounds. Arthur Bailey died from wounds on 1st July and he might have been wounded on an earlier occasion. |
