During the first two weeks of June, 1915, the 1st Norfolk battalion of 15 Brigade, 5th Division were in trenches near Hill 60 just to the south of Ypres during which time they sustained 46 casualties of whom seven were killed. One of these was Douglas Gordon who was killed on 6th June but the battalion diary provides no further information about his death. The attrition rate among British soldiers on the Western Front was on average 300 each day and 60% of these were as a result of shellfire. When not involved in an actual battle it was either shell fire or a sniper’s bullet that caused most deaths and injuries. |
