From March to July 1915, 5th Division held the line at Hill 60 in the southern part of the Ypres salient. This was the scene of much bitter fighting involving mining and shelling on an almost continuous basis as well as some large scale frontal attacks as both sides sought to gain control of the important vantage point with a clear view over Ypres The 1st Bedfordshire battalion of 15 Brigade, were one of the units involved in this struggle and it is likely that Charles Hibbit, who died from wounds on 24th June, after having been returned to England, was wounded during this period. |
