The 4th Worcestershire battalion was part of 29th Division, which fought in Gallipoli in 1915 and then, in March, 1916, returned to Europe and the Western Front. It is therefore difficult to explain the death of David Lewis who died from unspecified causes on 7th October, 1916 and who is buried in Baghdad after his body was exhumed from Hadjikiri Cemetery. At that stage Baghdad was under Turkish control which would suggest that he was a prisoner of war. He was obviously attached to another unit but the records do not make mention of this. |
