On 16th December, 1914, the 1st Royal West Kent battalion of 13 Brigade, 5th Division moved into trenches at Wulverghem, in Belgium, where they remained until relieved on 19th December. Very wet weather had left the ground here in a terrible state and men often preferred the risk of coming across in the open rather than try to make any progress in the thick mud of the communication trenches. On 18th December, the day on which Michael Sullivan was killed 2 men were killed and 7 wounded by shell and sniper fire. |
