On 28th November, 1914 the 1st Bedfordshire battalion of 15 Brigade, 5th Division moved into trenches north-west of Wulverghem in Belgium where they remained until relieved on 5th December.. These trenches were in very poor condition, water-logged and not always connected and on 30th November an extra 300 yard section was handed over to the battalion which they found to contain the bodies of unburied French soldiers and which were only 25 yards from the enemy front line. The task of repairing these positions had to be carried out often under shell and sniper fire and it is likely that it was one of these that resulted in the death of David Delaney on 3rd December. |
