From 4th to 10th December, 1914 the 1st Cornwall Light Infantry battalion of 14 Brigade, 5th Division were in the front line facing La Petite Douve Farm in Belgium. Here, heavy rain had made trenches awful and with the enemy lines 130 yards away and on a small rise, the water flowed down from there into the British trenches. To add to their miseries they had to contend with both artillery and sniper fire. One of their casualties during this period was Walter Breed who died from wounds on 12th December. |
