4th Royal Fusiliers were part of 9 Brigade, 3rd Division and in the Spring of 1916 had been involved in heavy fighting in the southern part of the Ypres salient. After a period out of the line at Meterten, they moved back into the front line at Kemmel on 25th April, 1916. On the following day, 26th April, the enemy kept up a heavy bombardment of their positions throughout the day and although the British artillery responded in kind they were unable to silence the German trench mortars. Altogether, 4th Royal Fusiliers suffered 36 casualties during the day, one of whom was Frederick Green. |
