For the next ten days they were training at Lillers before moving to Sailly-Labourse on 16th June for trench warfare instruction  with 44 Brigade of 15th Division in the nearby Hulluch and Hohenzollern Redoubt sectors of the front line. 13th East Surrey finished this period of instruction on 20th June, 1916 and moved back to Sailly-Labourse and Noyelles where for the next few days they provided working parties for various tasks which were often easy targets for the enemy artillery or snipers. John Ferrar died of wounds on 23rd June, 1916, and he could have been wounded either whilst undergoing trench instruction or while on one of the working parties.
