On 28th November, 1914, the 1st East Surrey battalion of 14 Brigade, 5th Division took over front line trenches near Wulverghem in Belgium where they remained until relieved on 1st December. The battalion diary recorded that this was a ‘quiet’ three days with not much shelling or sniping. Nevertheless there was enough to cause some casualties including James Hoare who was killed on 1st December. |
