On 31st January, 1916, 3rd Rifle Brigade of 17 Brigade, 24th Division left huts at Ouderdom and moved into the front line at Hooge in the Ypres salient. This was a notorious part of the line, with the opposing trenches close to each other and the German artillery ever active and their snipers always on the look out for targets. Frederick Standen died of wounds on 7th February, 1916,and it is likely he was one of those wounded during this period in the front line.
