On 10th December 1914, 1st East Surrey battalion of 14 Brigade, 5th Division, moved into the line at Wulverghem, just south of the Ypres salient where they remained until relieved on 17th December when they moved back to St Jans Cappel for a few days and then on 23rd December to billets in Dranoutre. Frederick Sweet died from wounds on 18th December, after having been sent to a base hospital on the coast and it is likely that he was wounded during this period spent in the front line, possibly on 14th December, when neighbouring divisions attacked the enemy at Wytschaete which resulted in heavy retaliatory artillery fire from the Germans lasting for two days. Some of these shells landed on 1st East Surrey and inflicted 40 casualties among their ranks. |
