On 27th March, 1915, the 1st Cornwall Light Infantry battalion of 14th Brigade, 5th Division moved into trenches south-west of Messines where they remained until relieved on 31st March. On 28th March, the day on which Harry Porter was killed, the battalion’s trenches were heavily shelled both by artillery and trench mortars and considerable damage was done to the parapet in places. A shortage of sandbags made it difficult to repair them and a number of casualties resulted in attempts to do so. |
