On 10th December 1914, 1st East Surrey battalion of 14 Brigade, 5th Division, moved into the line at Wulverghem, just south of the Ypres salient. On 14th December, neighbouring divisions attacked the enemy at Wytschaete and this resulted in heavy retaliatory artillery fire from the Germans which lasted for 2 days. Some of these shells landed on 1st East Surrey and inflicted 40 casualties among their ranks, 12 of whom were killed. Percival Cosedge died on 17th December and was likely to be one of these victims.
