On 6th August, 1917, the 9th Royal Fusiliers battalion of 36 Brigade, 12th Division moved into the front line near Arras. On 9th August a large raid was carried out by the other two brigades of the division which inevitably resulted in enemy artillery retaliation. This destroyed some of the trenches on the brigade front and caused some casualties among the battalion. One of these was Eric Noon who died on 10th August.
