On 28th May, 1915, the 2nd King’s Royal Rifle Corps battalion of 2 Brigade, 1st Division moved into the front line on the right of the La Bassée road at Cuinchy where they remained until relieved on 1st June. During their time here there was the usual sniping and bombing activity by both sides and on 29th May the enemy exploded a mine under the battalion’s lines. 2nd King’s Royal Rifle Corps sustained around twenty casualties including John Godfrey who was killed on 31st May. |
