The 3rd London battalion arrived in France by a roundabout route. In September 1914 they left England for Malta where they stayed until January 1915 at which time they sailed to France to join the Dehra Dun Brigade in the Meerut Division of the Indian Army. 18th June, 1915, 3rd London went into the front line trenches in the Richebourg-St Vaast sector where they remained until relieved on 28th June. Henry Chapman was killed on 27th June when at 8.30am the battalion’s trenches were heavily shelled for thirty minutes. |
