Second Battle of Ypres (April-May, 1915)

In April 1915 the Germans, using gas for the first time, launched an all out attack on the salient around the Belgian town of Ypres. It became a gargantuan struggle that lasted well into the next month and at the end of it, the salient, though drastically reduced, still stood.

Geoffrey Ffrangcon-Davies died from wounds on 10th May, 1915 after having been wounded on the previous day, probably by shell fire, while working on dug outs at Ridgewood, near Ypres. The 1st battalion of the Honourable Artillery Company were part of 7 Brigade, 3rd Division that had been in action around Ypres in the Spring of 1915.
