On 8th April, 1916, 9th East Surrey, 72 Brigade, 24th Division moved into the front line trenches at Wulverghen in the southern part of the Ypres salient where they remained until 15th April. The Battalion Diary records that on 12th April, 1916 the enemy artillery was sporadically active, firing both high explosive and shrapnel shells at the trenches held by 9th East Surrey and it is likely that one of these resulted in the death of Frederick Willats. |
