The 17th London (Poplar & Stepney Rifles) battalion arrived in France in March 1915 as part of 141 Brigade, 47th Division. On 13th May, 1915 they moved into the front line at Pont Fixe, Givenchy in northern France. The Battalion Diary recorded that on 29th May, 1915, C Company were in reserve when the enemy heavily shelled the bridge at Pont Fixe. One shell fell on a house where a platoon of this Company were billeted, killing eight soldiers. James Anderson was one of the casualties of this day.
