9th East Surrey of 72Brigade, 24th Division, arrived in the Ypres salient in early January, 1916 and on 26th January they began their second tour in the front line trenches at Hooge. The village of Hooge was by now battered beyond recognition and the trenches themselves, in the middle of a cold, wet winter were in a parlous state and largely water-logged. The Battalion diary makes no mention of casualties on this day but it was likely that Walter Carter was killed by shell fire. |
