In 1914, HM Tug Char, originally the Stranton, was requisitioned for war service to work as an unarmed boarding vessel, part of the North Downs Flotilla based at Ramsgate. In the early hours of 16th January, 1915, as a gale was blowing in the English Channel, she was in a collision with an oil tanker, the SS Erivan. Holed below the water line the vessel soon sank. All of her crew, including Camille Duchemin, perished. |
