HMS Recruit was a fast, Clydebank destroyer which came into service in 1900. At the start of the war she became part of the Nore Local Defence Flotilla. Her duties included anti-submarine and counter mining patrols in the Thames Estuary.

On 1st May 1915 she was on patrol in the southern part of the North Sea, not far from the Norfolk coast, when she was hit by a torpedo fired by the German submarine U6, broke in two and sank. There were 26 survivors from her crew of 65.
