Between the 10th and 12th September the Germans, having been halted in their stride at the Battle of the Marne and desperate not to be cut off,  retreated to the River Aisne where the natural defences were very strong. The British and the French Armies followed in pursuit.

On 12th September  4th Middlesex marched 13 miles to Braisne in vey wet conditions but the circumstances that resulted in Private Case being killed in action are not known.
