Between the 10th and 12th September the Germans, having been halted in their stride at the Battle of the Marne and desperate not to be cut off,  retreated to the River Aisne where the natural defences were very strong. The British and the French Armies followed in pursuit.

On 10th September, 4th Royal Fusiliers of 9Brigade 3rd Division  made contact with the Germans at Veuilly. A sharp engagement followed in which five men from 4th Royal Fusiliers were killed and another 29 wounded
