Current Information:Born-Islington Montreuil-aux-Lions British Cemetery Between the 10th and 12th September the Germans, having been halted in their stride at the Battle of the Marne and desperate not to be cut off, retreated to the River Aisne where the natural defences were very strong. The British and the French Armies followed in pursuit. On 10th September, 1st King’s Royal Rifle Corps, 6th Brigade, 2nd Division saw German troops moving from Vinly towards Chézy where they unlimbered their guns and deployed their infantry in a sunken road. At 10am 1st King’s Royal Rifle Corps advanced on these German positions and succeeded in pinning them down. At the same time 1st Berkshire and 2nd South Staffs worked round the flanks. The Germans surrendered with casualties of 150 from a force of 500. |
