2nd West Riding 13th Brigade, 5th Division

On 24 August 2nd West Riding 13th Brigade, 5th Division began the day in Wasmes where heavy German shelling caused some casualties. At 11am it was time for 13  and 14 Brigades to withdraw.  14th Brigade pulled back and formed up in Blaugies to cover the withdrawal of 13th Brigade.  13th Brigade then withdrew but 2nd West Riding and a battery of XXVII Brig RFA did not get the order and at 11.30am the Germans concentrated their fire on this battery.  There was a very fierce fight for 90minutes but the rifles of 2nd West Riding saved the battery.  At 1 pm a heavy German infantry attack was seen off at 800 yards  by 2nd West Riding who then withdrew.  They had stopped and driven back six German battalions but in so doing had suffered 400 casualties.
