24th London  (1st Surrey Rifles) arrived in France in March 1915 as part of 142 Brigade, 47th Division. After a period of trench training they took over a section of the line between Rue du Bois and Festubert in northern France. This was adjacent to the sector from which the southern part of the  attack on Aubers Ridge was launched on 9th May, 1915 and some of the fall out from that action, namely heavy German shelling fell on the trenches held by 24th London, causing a number of casualties.

Private Merrett died of wounds on this day and he may have been wounded in an earlier action.
