At the outbreak of war in 1914, 28th Division were in India and it was not until late January, 1915 that they arrived in France. Being a regular division they were quickly put into the trenches and in the case of 85 Brigade that meant water-logged positions south of Ypres near St. Eloi and Oosthoek. It was a far cry from the warmth of India and there were many cases of sickness and frostbite.

2nd East  Kent (Buffs)  and 3rd Royal Fusiliers were in the northern part of the Brigade line which was bisected by the Ypres-Comines canal.  Private McGough died of wounds on this day but as yet we have no further information regarding his death. He was buried at Boulogne so we can presume that he was wounded at an earlier date.
