14 Brigade of 5th Division arrived at Ypres on 7th  April, 1915 and four days later the 1st East Surrey battalion moved into the trenches ¼ mile south-west of Verbranden Molen, on the opposite side of Ypres-Comines railway to Hill 60, which was soon to become the scene of one of the hardest fights experienced by 1st East Surrey throughout the war. On this tour however they stayed in these trenches for four days during which time their casualties amounted to six men killed and another nineteen wounded. Most of these casualties resulted from shell fire and included Frederick Green who died from wounds on 15th April.
